Melanotan 2

What is Melanotan 2?

Melanotan 2

Melanotan 2 (MT-II) is an unlicensed and unregulated synthetic peptide that is an analogue of the naturally occurring alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (\(\alpha \)-MSH). It is most commonly used for cosmetic purposes to induce skin tanning, but also has effects on libido, appetite, and other physiological functions.

Mechanism of Action and Effects
Melanotan 2 acts as a non-selective agonist for several melanocortin receptors (MC1, MC3, MC4, and MC5) throughout the body, including the skin and the brain.
--Skin Tanning: By activating the MC1 receptor, it stimulates skin cells to produce more melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color, leading to a tanned appearance.
--Sexual Function: Activation of MC3 and MC4 receptors in the central nervous system can cause spontaneous penile erections in men (priapism) and increased sexual desire/arousal in both men and women. A related drug, bremelanotide, was developed from Melanotan 2 specifically to treat female sexual dysfunction.
--Appetite Suppression: MT-II can also suppress appetite, leading to weight loss, an effect attributed to the activation of MC4 receptors.

Safety and Regulatory Status
Melanotan 2 is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or other regulatory agencies (such as in the UK and Australia) for any use, including tanning. Its development was halted due to safety concerns.

--Unregulated: Products sold online as Melanotan 2 are unregulated, meaning their purity, safety, and efficacy are not guaranteed. They may contain contaminants or varying dosages, which poses a serious health risk.Potential
--Side Effects: Medical experts warn against its use due to a range of potential side effects, from common issues like nausea, vomiting, and facial flushing to more severe risks such as high blood pressure, kidney dysfunction (renal infarction), muscle cell destruction (rhabdomyolysis), brain swelling (encephalopathy syndrome), and prolonged, painful erections (priapism).
--Cancer Risk: There are concerns that stimulating pigment cells could lead to the development of new moles or potentially increase the risk of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.

Due to these significant health risks, health authorities strongly advise the public to avoid using Melanotan 2 products.
